On a good gravel road on the West Desert From the cache you need to walk straight south about 50 yards and you should be on top of the old mine.
I took 75 5th graders out on a school bus today to look at three different mines. This one has been covered over and leveled out in the last year but samples can still be found. I noticed that alot of sagebrush had grown over the area. This obsedian is called "Snowflake" because of the white specks inside the black. There are only two known places to find snowflake; one is here on the west desert and another is in South Africa.
We had a geologist with us who explained why the coloring of the different kinds of obsedian which was very interesting.
I know also that the Fremont Indians passed this way and picked up Obsedian (flint) to make their arrows and spears. They were on their way to Nevada to get pinenuts for their winter supply and would gather (flint) on their way back to parts of Utah and Arizona.
