Ammo Box
Originally filled with all manner of things a group of Cub Scouts could think of.
This area was part of the vast land holdings of Henry Miller. Miller had a summer residence in the area, now part of Mt. Madonna Park; the ruins of the home can still be seen in the park.
The redwoods in the area were logged by Miller's men near the turn of the 19th century. The redwood trees you find here today are part of the second growth forest, much of which grew out of the stump sprouts of the original trees. You will find the stumps from the original logging throughout the park and surrounding lands. Often a "fairy ring" of second growth trees will develop around an old stump.
If you look closely at most of these old stumps you will find notches cut into their sides. These notches were cut by the loggers in order to place a "springboard". Springboards were planks with a metal cleat on the end that the loggers would stick into the notches they made to make a sort of scaffolding upon which they would stand. They did this so they could cut the massive trees above the root swell at the base of the trees, making less work.
Keep an eye open for these stumps and the notches as you meander along trails anywhere in the California redwood forests.
