El Dorado National Forest, California 3/3 for Mystery Cache, 1.2 mile hike and 330 ft elevation change
Our first find was Every One Needs a Castle (Rock), a puzzle cache. Like everyone else, we wondered why the mountain was given its name. We did some research and finally discovered the rock formation. See the gallery for a picture taken from the West side of the valley (you approach from the East side).
If there are any geologists among the geocachers, maybe they can tell us about the formation. There are Indian grinding rocks here so please tread lightly. Hiking boots are recommended. Access may be difficult in the winter and low clearance vehicles are not recommended. This does not require 4 WD in the summer.
Castle Rock Sudoku and Every One Needs a Castle (Rock) are good caches to do at the same time, however, we recommend that you start the search for each cache from its posted coordinates. It is possible to walk from one directly to the other, but the terrain is much more difficult.
This is our first hide and we decided to make our cache a puzzle cache too. The coordinates above will take you to a parking area. In order to find the cache (an ammo box), you will have to solve the Sudoku puzzle (found in the Gallery). This is a 1.2 mile hike with a 330 foot elevation change. Be sure to find the Castle Rocks nearby - see the picture "Castle Rocks at Sunset".
From the puzzle solution, the final coordinates are:
North:

6C 2G 3G 8A 5E
West:
