Geocache Description:

St Mary's Church Witney

St Mary's Church is an impressive church which dominates the end of Church Green.
The church was rebuilt in 1243 and the dominating spire, which is 156 foot, can be seen for miles around.
The size of the church and its spire shows Witney's importance in the middle ages having gained much
of its wealth from the wool trade.

Witney's famous Witney Feast takes place each year in celebration of the Nativity of St. Mary.
This happens on the Leys playing field behind the church.
You can access the Leys by a major footpath which cuts through the church yard and is used by everyone.

Have you seen the monkey? The story goes that at the feast
a monkey escaped and climbed the spire, only to be turned to stone....

The cache is at the entrance to this footpath at the front of the church.
You could treat this cache as a "Cache N Dash" as you could park your car next to it.
Situated in a key position you are looking for a magnetic cache just inside the entrance to the main footpath.
