Deutsche Version:
Der aus Buntsandtein bestehende, ca. 4,75 m hohe Menhir
ist einer der größten Deutschlands,
sein Gewicht wird mit rund 10 t angenommen.
Der Menhir war ursprünglich über 6 Meter, doch er wurde durch einen
Blitzschlag auf die Höhe von 4,75 m verkürzt.
Der Name des Ortes Langenstein ist eindeutig auf dieses Monument
zurückzuführen.
Men hir ist ein keltisch-bretonisches Wort, das soviel wie langer
Stein bedeutet.
Der Buntsandstein ist die untere lithostratigrafische Gruppe
der Germanischen Trias in der Geologie.
Auf die lithostratigrafische Einheit des Buntsandsteins folgte in
der Trias
der Muschelkalk und der Keuper.
Früher wurde der Buntsandstein (und auch der Muschelkalk) als
Zeiteinheit aufgefasst
und zum Teil auch als Untertrias (bzw. der Muschelkalk als
Mitteltrias) bezeichnet.
Die Grenze Unter-/Mitteltrias liegt jedoch tiefer als die
Buntsandstein/Muschelkalk-Grenze.
Daher darf der Buntsandstein heute nur noch als
lithostratigrafische Einheit aufgefasst werden.
Der Begriff Buntsandstein stammt nicht, wie man vermuten
könnte
von der bunten Färbung der Gesteine,
sondern die verschiedenartigen Sande bilden einen "Verbund".
Derartige, von Menschenhand errichtete Steinmale
sind in weiten Teilen Mitteleuropas verbreitet, besonders bekannt
sind die Steinreihen von Carnac in der Bretangne oder auch in
England.
Sie sind aber auch in Deutschland relativ häufig, treten hier
jedoch meist nur einzeln und nicht wie in Frankreich in langen
Reihen auf.
Sie treten im dritten Jahrtausend v. Chr. häufig auf,
eine genaue Datierung ist jedoch meist nicht möglich.

English Version:
The approx. 4.75 m high Menhir consisting of bunter
is one of the largest in Germany, its weight is expected with about
10 t.
The Menhir was original over 6 meters, but he was shortened
by a thunderbolt to the height of 4,75 m.
The name of the city Langenstein (long stone) is definitely lead
back to this monument.
Men hir is a of Breton origin and a Celtic word, which means as
much as long stone.
Bunter is the lower lithostratigraphic group of the Germanic Trias
in geology.
After the lithostratigraphic unit of bunter in Trias followed the
shell limestone
and the Keuper (Upper Trias).
In former times bunter (and also the shell limestone) was
understood as a time unit
and also partially designated as Lower Trias
(and accordingly the shell limestone as Middle Trias).
The border Lower/Middle Trias lies however more deeply than
the bunter/shell limestone border.
So today bunter can be only considered as a lithostratigraphic
unit.
The term bunter does not come, as someone could assume
from the multicolored colouring of the rocks,
peculiar the different colored sands form a "compound".
Such stone marks established by human hand are spread in far parts
of Central Europe,
particularly admit are the stone rows of Carnac in Brittany or also
in England.
They are relatively frequent in Germany, too, but arise here
however usually only separately and not like in France in long
rows.
They appeared in the third millenium before Christ,
but an exact dating is in most cases not possible.
