Geocache Description:


This is one of a small series of caches along Stockports Heritage Trail. The full trail is well worth the walk and a map can be obtained from the Information Centre which is situated in the market place.

The bronze statue was unveiled in 1886, Richard Cobden was MP for Stockport from 1841-1847 and was a founder member of "The Anti Corn Law League" He succeeded in repealing the hated Corn Laws which kept the price of grain high and consequently the cost of bread as a staple food was high.
Across the square is St Peters church. This was erected in 1768 and Stockports second oldest church. It was damaged in the Stockport Riots in 1852 when a number of people lost their lives.
