Geocache Description:

Lithification is a term meaning "conversion into rock".

Sedimentary lithification occurs when sediments are compacted by the weight of overlying layers and cemented together as percolating water fills the pores with mineral matter.

Posted coords will take you to a spot where you can actually see this process taking place. While standing in the creek bottom you can clearly see the soil near the top (above the gps in photo). As you look closer near the bottom of the creek (below stick arrow in photo), you can now see the shale bed beginning to form. This event is part of a much grander process called the "Rock Cycle".

To log this earthcache please post a photo of yourself and gps at coords with "lithification wall" behind you. You will also need to answer these questions via Email.

1.Approximately how wide is the creek channel at this location ?

2.What type of rock lines the bottom of the creek channel ?

3.Just above the lithification wall lies a large rock -- what are it's dimensions.

As always take nothing and leave only your footprints.

Jeepstaff & Trooper.
