Geocache Description:

500 years of golfing history. 1506 – 2006.

Can you believe that documented proof exists that on a winter’s day in 1506 King James VI rode out from his Palace at Stirling Castle to play a regal round of golf with the Earl of Bothwell in the vast King's Park hunting grounds below?

The golf course lies on a tilted slab of volcanic lavas in full view of Stirling castle. This land was once a favoured hunting ground of Scottish Monarchs. It has been known for centuries as The King’s Park and it may have been through this connection that the Royal and Ancient game, or some form of it, was played here as long ago as the 16th century.

Today those fortunate enough to play at Stirling Golf Club enjoy one of Golf’s most spectacular backdrops. Stirling Castle with the Carse and the Trossachs beyond.

There is no finer place on earth to enjoy a game of golf. Steeped in history, set in the Kings Park, Stirling is a golf course of outstanding quality and rare beauty.

Tom Morris Jnr who was the first club professional in 1873 originally designed it. James Braid improved on this layout and then Henry Cotton further redesigned it in 1966. The course offers some of the finest views in Scotland covering the Forth Valley and the local mountains. On a clear day you can see Ben Lomond, Ben Venue, Ben Ledi and Stuc a Chroin.

There are ancient rights of way on this golf course and the outline of a race track is still visible in the interior of the course.

A path runs round the perimeter of this course so there is no need for you to dodge wayward golf balls.

Since this cache is placed at the furthest extremity of this then I suggest that you do this as a circular walk. The best views are to go in a clockwise direction starting from near the tennis courts of King’s Park but you can also do this from the Golf Course Car Park entrance.

Please do take care when you are near the cache as there is a steep drop but the cache is not in a difficult or inaccessible place. This is a big box which is partially filled with goodies to start with.

I hope your feeling up to par,
If you’ve come here, it’s not too far
The lock and lock will hold many prizes
So bring along your travel bug sizes.
