Geocache Description:

The starting co-ordinates will take you to a popular spot in Wagga Wagga where a monument is dedicated to the great explorer Charles Sturt. He was born in 1795 and died in 1869.Many journeys were made by Sturt including the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers whilst looking for an inland sea.

With instructions from Governor Darling,Sturt led a party of 8 men on November 3,1829 to begin his "Epic journey".They travelled west from Sydney by bullock tray and horse until they reached the present site of Jugiong after 30 days.

Then, the party treked along the Murrumbidgee to a campsite just outside Wagga where they noted plenty of kangaroo's and wild turkeys. They remarked of a large double hill in the region later named "Galore Hill" and The Rock ( Kengal ).Further on ,the party used a small boat to travel, and reached the Murray River on January 14,1830.They travelled as far as Lake Alexandrina. After finding the Murray entered the sea,the group had a difficult time rowing back upstream and got all the way back to Narrandera on April 11,1830.From there, they walked the entire trip back to Sydney arriving on May 25,1830.

The monument at Wagga beach is part of an area very little tourists get to take advantage of ,and now from this multi and a recent archive of another nearby cache called "5 o,clock wave",they can.The area includes plenty of swimming beaches for the summer swimming, undercover bar-b-q's,walking trails ,a 200 space car park,a caravan park, toilet facilities, nearby historical information on "The Wagga Floods","The Wiraduri Tribe","The Murrumbidge system", and local flora and fauna, together with very scenic views.Visitors can still catch the famous 5 O'clock wave each day as it travels downstream ,an event not to be missed.
