Geocache Description:

Do you dare venture into the eerie woods of …Piper Glen?

Few these days have heard the whispered tales of the mysterious sounds and floating “mists” in this part of the county. Even fewer know that years ago this now developed, suburban area was home to groups of dwellers that inhabited the swamps of southern Mecklenburg county. Preferring a hermit-like existence, they shunned contact with others and kept to themselves in their then secluded home. They ventured out only occasionally to trade at the crossroads of what is now Highway 51 and Providence Rd.

Their anti-social ways provoked the ire of farmers in the region. There were accusations of pilfering from their farmlands, stolen live stock and…worse. Some suspected that some sort of strange rites were being held in these wooded swamps. Some even suspected that they were consorting with their long-dead ancestors who went before them. Strange floating lights and unearthly sounds that sometimes emanated from the area did nothing to quell the rumors of what went on “out there.”

There is no record of what happened to these mysterious inhabitants. Some say it was disease that took them out. Some say they just left. Others suspect that the irate farmers got together one autumn night many years ago and as one descendent said, “Did what was necessary to git rid of that problem out there.” Either way, like the Lost Colony they suddenly disappeared without a trace, leaving no evidence behind…or did they? Up through the early 1960’s it was still said that if one goes into the swamps and woods day or night one could see and hear things that one wouldn’t want to witness twice in his life.

Fast forward to the New Millennium. Technology allows us to detect things that are not discernable to the human senses. This cache includes a special camera that can detect images that even the human eye cannot. If you choose to seek this cache, take a picture of yourself with the camera. Once the camera gets filled up with photos, I will post them on the cache listing. We all may be surprised by what may appear in the image with you!

You will not have to walk far into the woods to retrieve this cache, although the journey may not be easy. Feel free to leave any spooky trinkets behind to keep in the “spirit” of this hide. The easiest parking is at 35° 04.702, 080 49.166 but there are other options. Beware that during wet weather this area is indeed a swamp. Prepare yourself accordingly. Also, the special camera is indeed a sensitive piece of equipment. Please be sure that you return the camera to the protective container after you use it. Take only one picture so that others may have the opportunity. If you are particularly daring, seek this cache at night. Just follow your GPS and look for the glowing “eyes” that guard the box that contains the camera. A flashlight held at eye level will reveal them.

Good luck and it is hoped that you can return from the woods to log your find.
