This area is used year round by local kayakers, canoers and
fishermen. The area is open to the public 24/7. Please be
considerate of the other users of this area.
The area has been, and continues to be upgraded to improve creek
access and has been part of the "Spring Creek improvement project"
by Clearwater conservancy. The creek was narrowed a few years ago
to improve flow, and to restore the banks that have been washed
away from many years of erosion.
Cache seekers might run into a local legend of sorts; Dave
Kurtz. Dave has been teaching people, mostly youth, to kayak since
the 70's. He has trained many youth that have gone on to compete in
national kayak and canoe races and even the Olympics. Dave can
almost always be seen at the park on weekday afternoons. Don't be
surprised if he tries to put you into a boat too!
For those wondering about the unique poles that hang over the
water at this site, these are slalom gates. The gates are used by
local kayakers and canoers to practice. When competing they are set
in a specified order and specified direction to pass through. These
gates are part of the challenge. In a competition every second
counts, if you touch one of these gates you receive a 2 second
penalty. Watch the boaters practice and see how close and fast they
can move without touching a single gate and the agony of the moment
a mistake is made and a gate is touched.
Best chance to see local paddlers in action is to come by on
weekday afternoons after 4pm.
** Access to the cache site will require crossing active
railroad tracks. These tracks are owned by the Nittany and Bald
Eagle Railway. They have granted permission to cross the tracks
ONLY AT THE CROSSING. Please use the crossing to get to the park.
They have threatened to close the crossing altogether if we do not
use it and cross elsewhere. They have provided a official crossing
for a reason. **
