Geocache Description:

A traditional micro cache attached to or associated with a locomotive with an interesting and perhaps slightly infamous past.

Many years ago I went on a school excursion to a large group of railway workshops somewhere in Melbourne. At the time I had no idea where it was since we were driven to the location in a bus and as far as I could remember we drove around in circles and arrived at the workshops which might have been on the moon as far as I could tell. Later I realised it was the Victorian Railways Workshops at Newport and I’ve only just begun to realise the extent of the industry that took place here.

The Newport workshops were established in 1888 and employed over 5000 workers at its peak and the locomotive you see before you was built in those workshops along with many others too numerous to mention.

Rather than copy large chunks of information into this cache description which most of you won’t read anyway, I’ll simply provide a link to one of the many web sites I found on the subject, this being one of the most informative.

There is also a very interesting story about how this particular locomotive came to be here and what actually happened to “the real K183” It was involved in a level crossing accident with a B Double Truck at Benalla which unfortunately resulted in the deaths of three people. The locomotive you see before you is actually K162 and while the story is outlined quite clearly on the information board at GZ I have also found a full PDF report on the accident which also makes interesting reading.
You can download this report from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau from the following link.
