Geocache Description:

This cache is located near a giant Geoglyph on a hill in the "Black Mesa" area of Yucca Valley. The Geoglyph is named "Rythms of Life".

The Glyph was constructed by Australian artist Andrew Rogers. It consists of approximately 420 tons of dry-stacked rock.

This sculpture is part of a chain of similar earthworks, others having been built since 1999 in such countries as China, Bolivia, Sri Lanka, Chile, Slovakia, Nepal, Australia and Iceland. The Yucca Valley project is the only one so far constructed in the United States.

Work on the sculpture was by a crew of approximately 30 local masonry workers stacking the rock in accordance with plans laid out by Rogers and a team of architects from Israel who assisted with the design details. The project was documented for the Discovery International Channel.

The artist calls the earthworks "geoglyphs" because they are scaled up land art designs that generally have been derived from local petroglyphs, pictographs and the like.

The Yucca Valley site was selected as a result of a collaboration between the artist and Copper Mountain College art professor Spelman Evans Downer.

Professor Spelman Downer has been championing an earthworks identity for the Morongo Basin since settling in the community in 2001. For the past four years, Downer and Rogers have had been communicating regarding the possibility of an internationally significant earthworks project in the local area.

The "Rhythm of Life" Geoglyph is located on a hill overlooking the Mojave Desert. It is built out of stacked light-colored rock contrasting with the dark lava of the mesa site. It is near the Town of Yucca Valley welcome sign on Highway 247 that greets visitors as they drive into the town from the north.
