Michigan Craft Brewing: Jack O'Lantern Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Ypsi Gizmo: The brewing operations have moved to a new, expanded location elsewhere in the city, so we are going to archive this one. We really enjoyed all the logs and visits, thanks!

Geocache Description:

This series celebrates Michigan craft brewing. Hides in this series are located near or on the premises of craft beer locations, but none require entering the establishments to make the find.

Craft brews, sometimes called microbrews, are beers made in smaller batches by independent brewers. The state of Michigan updated its brewing license laws in 1993, launching a burgeoning industry of microbreweries, brewpubs, and suppliers of home brewing enthusiasts. As of 2012, there are over 95 microbreweries and brewpubs in the state of Michigan. Most serve some sort of food and non-alcoholic beverages, and many are family-friendly during daytime hours. Dozens of Michigan home brewing clubs meet regularly to share recipes and techniques. Craft beer festivals and competitions are held across the state throughout the year.

grain silo Founded in 2004, this brewery makes use of open fermentation (wild yeasts) and oak barrel aging to produce delightfully sour beers and farmhouse ales in the Belgian tradition. No two batches are ever exactly the same, intentionally and enjoyably so. The brewery is named after two of the very favorite things of the founders: Halloween and pirates! There is no brewpub at this unassuming location, though there is a small retail store with irregular hours. If they are open and you drop in, you may get a chance to say hello to the owners Laurie and Ron (the latter also being the the head brewer). If they are not open, you can find their product sold in wine bottles at various local stores that carry craft beers. They are well known and widely distributed. This is no doubt due to the quality and uniqueness of their products, which have won awards at the Great American Beer Festival. Once we were visiting Tokyo, Japan and were pleased to find two of their beverages on sale at a store there!

NOTES: No need to worry... everyone who works at the brewery knows about the geocache (but do watch out for muggles from elsewhere). As with all hides in this series, the geocache is not located inside of the establishment.
