The idea to promote culture, forestry and ecology was born amongst
the Druskininkai forestry experts. The young energetic forester Mr.
Valavicius and the greatly experienced Mr. Stankevicius were
ruminating about a place, where one could demonstrate the beautiful
products of forestry activities. So they picked grain after grain
until they accumulated a granary of forestry culture. No sooner
said than done. In 1970 the Minister for Forestry Mr. Matulionis
ratified the project, assigned funds and on the initiative of Mr.
Valavicius the museum of forestry "Girios aidas" began its
activity. In the halls named "Ažuolas" (Oak), "Beržas" (Birch),
"Egle" (Fir-tree) and "Pušis" (Pine-tree) there were expositions of
wooden artistic objects. Later compositions "Forest Birds", "Forest
Animals" and others were added. The museum founded a library.
Visitors grew fond of the museum in the health-resort of
Druskininkai; the number of foreign guests was growing steadily.
Unfortunately in 1972 ill-fated fire laid the beautiful product of
human work in ashes. Thanks to great efforts the museum was rebuilt
in 1973 and became three and a half times larger than before. The
activities of the museum became more diverse. It now hosts
expositions of products of wood carving artisans from all over
Lithuania. It organizes open-air activities for folk artists of the
region of Dzukija, as well as art workshops. Workshops and
education of "young friends of forest" are held. Conferences and
seminars for scientists are organized. In the winter of 2003/2004
the main museum building underwent a reconstruction and the founder
of the organization was changed. The Museum of Lithuanian Forestry
Association becomes the "Education and Information Center" of the
Druskininkai Forest Company.
