Easy walk and private if you go the recommended way.
I have introduced you to three artists in my Delta Blues Series. Now you might be wondering “where does one go to hear real blues?”. The answer is---a juke joint.
A juke (or jook) joint is the vernacular term for an informal establishment featuring music, dancing, gambling, and drinking, primarily operated by African American people in the southeastern U.S. Set up on the outskirts of town, often in ramshackle buildings or private houses, juke joints offer food, drink, dancing and gambling for weary rural workers.
I could take a lot of space writing about juke joints, but instead I will provide an address to my friend Junior Doughty’s website. This website (www.deltablues.net) is considered by most folks to be THE foremost source of info on juke joints. He is a cutural anthropologist and delta bum...fascinating website.
And just in case you are wondering, the sound of the blues first beckoned me into a juke joint when I was just nine years old. My stay was brief as my Daddy snatched me out by my pigtails about 5 minutes later. But I was hooked. If you want to see a few good movies featuring jukes, rent “The Color Purple” or “Honeydripper”, both have good portrayals of life at a juke.
If you find yourself in full view of the "Sports Style" store window, then you need to move a little noth. I have placed the cache so you can retrieve it out of view of the stores and businesses. You should be approximately 40 feet due west of a stone pillar.
