Geocache Description:

The present cemeteries were first established here in the summer of 1851, by the summer of 1852 the property had been enclosed with a new fence. The new cemetery was divided into three parts for the use of the Church of England, the Roman Catholics, and for the other Christian denominations. The western section of the large cemetery grounds were leased to the Rector and congregation of St. Peter’s Church for 99 years and was known as St. Peter’s Cemetery. The southern section was turned over to St. Francis Xavier R.C. parish, and the central portion, then named the General Protestant Cemetery, remained under the control of Brockville Town Council.

In 1890 the Brockville Cemetery was enlarged with the purchase of an additional forty-six acres on the north side of the highway. Thus it was that the new Oakland Cemetery, St. Peter’s Cemetery, and St. Francis Xavier Cemetery were planned and opened on the north side of the highway.

This cache is placed near the Page and Pickup Family vaults. For the curious, have a look at the Pickup Family vault which is closest to the cache, does anything look odd about the door.

Dogs are permitted but please keep them on a leash and clean up after them, thank you.
