Waharau Regional Park is the eastern gateway to the Hunua Ranges with a series of loop walks traversing the foothills.
The regenerating kanuka dominated forest on the lower slopes is home to a wide variety of plant species from club mosses, filmy terns, ground orchids and liverworts to coral lichens that give bushes a magical 'goblin-like' appearance.
Regenerating mixed kauri and hard beech forest grows on the higher slopes beside plentiful tanekaha, rewarewa, hinau and towai. The nearby gullies are draped in tawa forest with emerging rimu, northern rata, kahikatea and totara.
The red and yellow markers will lead the way to the cache, which should take you around 1 hour for the return trip, but could be longer if you decide to do one of the loop tracks back. Keep an eye open for a short side track which will lead you to the cache site. This is a lovely area to explore so plan a picnic and enjoy your visit.
There are good views from the cache site, and also on the way up the hill as you go up the first paddock. The stock are fairly people friendly.
