The Cyprus Government Railway (CGR) operated from 1905 to 1951, with a total length of 76 miles. There were 39 stations, stops and halts running from Famagusta to Evrykhou via Nicosia and Morphou.
The construction of the 2’6” gauge railway began in 1904 and continued to 1915 at a cost of £199,367.00.
The CGR owned a total of 12 locomotives, 17 coaches and about 100 multi-purpose wagons and employed around 200 people.
The railway carried freight including timber from the Troodos mountains, ore and minerals in co-operation with the Cyprus Mines Corporation and also carried mail.
The local stations functioned as a facility for the exchange of goods and services while some also operated as telephone centres and Post offices etc. for the people of Cyprus. Overall, the CGR carried 3,199,934 tons of paying goods and 7,348,643 passengers.
Due to lack of profit, ramshackle equipment and unequal competition with the improved road network the railway closed in December 1951, and it was dismantled by March 1952.
EVRYKHOU STATION – This magnificent building remains, having survived a disastrous fire in 1957 and is now almost fully restored to its former glory.
During the operation of the railway Evrykhou was the end of the line (the terminus) and was closed down earlier than the more eastern parts. The station opened in 1915 and closed in 1931.
When the station closed it became a Sanatorium and subsequently a forestry services dormitory until it was destroyed by the fire.
The ‘track bed’ is now almost non-existent but we have found evidence of it further north and the next cache to be published in this series will allow you to stand on the path of the original railway line. (See ‘CGR Series – Skouriotissa’)
The approach to the Station is by a partially destroyed cobbled road which was part of the old Camel trading route from Nicosia to Troodos.
