Geocache Description:

Blacktail rocks from Mt Baldy Eagle River AK 99577

As a dedication to the best of friends we ( and by we I mean McTred see previous ) lugged this cache up to the mountains. Inspired in part by Mtboy we have placed this cache in its home along the cliff bands of the Blacktail rocks. It should be accessible all year long and in hopes of mostly year round cachers the 50mm ammo box is not hidden very well. ( this was due to some snow and not really seeing any good hiding spots for such a large container. Should be a low muggle area ) Baldy trail is open all year long and normally packed and a little slick in the winter so I would recommend some crampons if you have them, if not some trekking poles work great ) the pictures in the background show us doing some team rope work please note there is no/little technical skills necessary for this cache. If you have done any of Mtboy’s caches you are prepared for this one also. I did not have my GPSr on when we did the assent ( it was cold out ) but looking at some contradictory reports it either 2.5 – 8 miles I would say it’s about 6. after baldy’s summit it’s a ridge run till the base of black tail. I think I’m on the average speed guy with out stopping and having a bite to eat it takes me about 4 hours to summit and hit the parking lot again. Directions From Anchorage, head towards Eagle River on the Glen highway. Take the "Highland / Eagle River Loop" exit and head into town. After crossing a bridge and a few intersections, the road will eventually began to turn left. As soon as it starts to curve, look for "W Skyline" on your right and turn. This somewhat windy road leads to the parking lot at the top, where the trail begins. ( please note the road changes names a few times, just stay on the main road, park as far as you can up the road. There is a gate leading to the radio tower this is the start of the trail head, after you climb a small hill two – three hundred yards up steer left and your on the baldy trail ) Trail Stuff There are spots to water your puppy along the way in the spring from the melt. Late summer there are fewer sources ( there is one close to the base ) there is also a little stream if you feel like another mile traverse near the base of black tail ( north east side ) Chugiak State Park # 05-099 / 08-156 12-28-09 update, there seems to be a thermos and some other caches in the area. this cache is a 55mm ammo ( the large one ) and should still have a laminated page in it that states its the oil and army cache. good luck,
