This cache has been archived.

rainbowtree: DO NOT post a log to this cache.
If you choose to disregard CO's request and log this archived cache, be sure you have the following ...
1. Pics at the required coordinates with you or your signature item as verification of visit.
2. All questions completely/thoughtfully answered.
A special thank you to those who completed all the requirements as requested -and- added the Journeys to your log.

Use the following information if another cacher wishes to create an earthcache here.

Although the earthcache does not have a physical container, an individual must still have permission documented in writing for the placement of the cache. All geocaches on state forest land must go through a review to determine if the location of the cache is appropriate based on environmental impact and safety factors.

It is likely that because the cache is located on an existing trail, there will be no problem with the review, but Moshannon State Forest still needs to document the full name, mailing address, and telephone number of the person responsible for the cache and document that the review has been done.

Please send the information for the person responsible for the cache to initiate the review process. Until the review is complete, the cache should remain disabled.

Thank you for your cooperation and your interest in outdoor recreation in Moshannon State Forest.

Geocache Description:

The Allegheny Front is a portion of the escarpment (margin between different physiogeographic provinces involving a steep change in elevation) that delineates the eastern edge of the Appalachian Plateau (also known as the Allegheny Plateau ) and the higher ranges of the Ridge and Valley Appalachians.

While the entire escarpment, of which the Allegheny Front is a part, stretches from New York (the Helderbergs) to Tennessee (Cumberland Mountain and Waldens Ridge), the portion known as the Allegheny Front extends southwesterly from south-central Pennsylvania, through western Maryland and eastern West Virginia to a portion of the West Virginia/Virginia border. In Maryland the front is known as Dan's Mountain. The elevational change of the front ranges from less than 2,000 feet (600 meters) in Pennsylvania to nearly 3,000 feet (900 meters) in West Virginia.

Historically, the front was the edge of a salt evaporite basin formed at the end of the Silurian period, which created significant differences in the erosionary properties of rocks to either side of the front. The terrain differences to either side are also partially caused by the Alleghenian orogeny, in which Gondwana (modern Africa) impacted and overrode part of what is now the North American crustal plate, thrusting and piling up the ridge mountains of the physiographic regions to the east.

The main physiographic sections of the Appalachian Plateau (generally ordered from the northeast to the southwest) are named the Mohawk section, the Catskill section, the southern New York section, the Allegheny Plateau section, the Kanawha section, the Cumberland Plateau section, and the Cumberland Mountains section.

The coordinates bring you to Ralph's Majestic Vista located on the Allegheny Front. The Allegheny Front Trail (AFT) is 40 miles long and encircles Black Moshannon State Park. The AFT traverses some rocky, rugged portions of the Allegheny Plateau, passes along five different mountain trout streams and the Moshannon Creek, and includes 11 vistas along its circuit.
