It's not the La Berea Tar Pits http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Brea_Tar_Pits, but it's pretty darn close.
On July 7, 2006, while excavating for the new M59/Adams Rd interchange, construction workers unearthed some large animal bones. They quickly contacted the city of Rochester Hills, who then contacted Cranbrook Institute. Through carbon dating and other test, they determined that this was a male mastadon aprox. 25 years old, stood 8 feet at the shoulders who got stuck in the muck of a swamp here and died about 12,350 years ago. This is the 16th mastadon to have been found in Oakland Co.
There is a new parking lot aprox 1/4mi east of this site.
Early finders will find the preliminary container I hid, it will be changed to something more appropriate to the site soon.
