Geocache Description:

Nanny Mountain is a York County Park with hiking trails.

This monadnock is a little-known gem full of history dating back to before the American Revolution. The Carolina Piedmont’s first major industry--a vast "iron plantation" that employed hundreds of slaves and skilled workers. Many historians also believe Nanny’s Mountain was a stop for runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad. The highest point in the county, Nanny’s Mountain rises 200 feet and offers unique views of Lake Wylie’s shoreline, Charlotte’s skyscrapers and neighboring peaks such as Kings Mountain, Crowders Mountain and Henry’s Knob.

The iron industry developed in the northwestern piedmont of South Carolina and adjacent southcentral North Carolina in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries becausethis region contained five resources essential for iron production. In decreasing order of importance, these were as follows: iron ore, extensive hardwood forests, fast-flowing streams and rivers with numerous rapids and waterfalls, marble (metamorphosed limestone ), and metamorphic crystalline rocks suitable for use as building stone.
