FRANKIN DEVEREAUX
Born Oct.1830 Died Sept. 4 1883
In august 1884 indian Sam Flynn found Devereaux body and that of a bear on this spot. Torn turf revealed signs of an struggle. Natives surmised the hermit and the bear met in a clump of berry bushes.
The man mortally wounded the bear , but it had enough strengh to charge. Devereaux's skull fractured, died while sitting on a log, head held in his hands, the bear, mouth torn by a blow from the gun barrel, crawled to a knoll a few feet away were it died.
Franklin D was a civil war Veteran.
