UPDATE: 09/08/2009. I have replaced and upgraded this cache and it is now active again. Please use caution when retrieving it, it is tethered to the stash location by a carabiner that must be unlatched to remove it. When finished, please replace the cache exactly as found and recover. Hopefully with the new container and stash method the cache should now be able to better withstand the location. Please enjoy.
This is a journey across Rhodes Millpond deep into the Black River Swamp on the other side. This cache is for kayaks or canoes. It is NOT possible to walk to this cache.
Rhodes Pond is a historical hunting area and fishcamp that dates back more than 200 years. The land has recently been acquired by the State of North Carolina and is managed by the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission. The pond is a vast expansion of cypress tree blackwater and is home to a diverse population of birds and other wildlife.
Black River Swamp Cache is my attempt to provide cache seekers a tour of Rhodes Pond and its headwaters, Black River Swamp. Access Rhodes Pond at the old fish camp building located directly off US 301. The key to finding the cache is finding the "channel" of water feeding the pond from Black River and following that channel deep into the swamp. Just stick to the main channel and you will be fine, and remember that it curves quite a bit.
Please allow at least 2 hours paddling time roundtrip to hunt this cache. You will not be able to exit your boat at the cache location. This cache is difficult and requires significant paddling through a swampy area.
Rhodes Pond offers some great fishing opportunities so if you like to fish don't forget to bring your rod along. Also I suggest you visit nearby historical Averasboro Battleground if you have time.
