Easy walk round woodland trails. Some parts of the path may be muddy after rain.
Fife Council set up Gillingshill Reservoir as a nature reserve in 1996, after the reservoir on the site was decommissioned. It was originally created to supply water to the East Neuk in the Victorian era, becoming surplus to requirements with the construction of larger water supplies in the Lomond Hills and Glen Devon. The site is a mixture of open water, woodland, scrub and meadow, each of which is important for different wildlife.
The reservoir is home to a variety of water fowl, including coot, little grebe and swan. During the migration season it even has occasional visits from rarer birds like green sandpiper. In late summer the air is filled with dragonflies and damselflies which have hatched from the water.
The woodland is full of bluebells and other flowers in spring. Autumn brings a wide variety of fungi, both on the wood and around the trees. Buzzards, woodpeckers and treecreepers can be seen all year round.
The scrub is essential for the safe breeding of many small birds such as warblers and yellowhammers. In spring the site is alive with their songs.
One of the main features of the site is the meadow. It is one of the few remaining in Fife to have such a diversity of wild flowers and grassland fungi. Annual mowing helps to maintain this diversity.
In September 2006, Gillingshill Reservoir was opened as a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) by Lord Jamie Lindsay.
Please help to protect this site by taking your litter home, keeping dogs on a lead, picking up behind them and disposing of it properly.
Some parts of the path may be muddy after rain and unfortunately are not stroller friendly.
This is my first attempt at placing a cache so any hints or tips much appreciated.
The cache is a medium sized lock and lock container. At the time of placing the cache contained a pack of cards, purse containing hair clips, snake, glitter, highlighter pen and a magnet.
