Hallowed Ground Traditional Cache
Outdoors Duo: This area has be come so over grown with weeds, small trees, bushes, that it is almost impossible to get to. It was reported damp, and we checked on it and it was wet, but getting to it was awful. There is another cache very close to this one, so we are taking it off line. Outdoors Duo

Located in wooded area near Elmwood Cemetery. Enter the woods from Elmwood Street, this will save you some major bushwacking. To see Peter Mc Cullough's grave, you will need to drive in the Cemetery.
This cache has been placed in an area south of Elmwood Cemetery in Mexico, Missouri. This is a large city cemetery with numerous noteable persons buried there. One of which is the "The Hanging Judge of Andersonville Prison, Peter McCullough". Born Dec 12, 1839 and died Dec 5, 1915. As a Union Soldier captured, McCullough was taken prisoner to Andersonville, Georgia and held there. During incarceration, living conditions became horrible with little food or clean water. A group of "raiders" (also prisoners within the compound) preyed on new soldiers being brought in and took items from them and beat them severely. McCullough and a large group of men finally had enough of this situation and confronted the "raiders". They were able to pursuade the Confederate Commander, Henry Wirtz, in charge of the camp to hold a trial and ultimately the six leaders of the group were hanged.
After locating the cache be sure to drive by McCullough's grave it is in Section "C" of the cemetery, and if you come in under the arch it is the 5th grass covered path from the entrance. (on the right).
