Geocache Description:

A half mile hike over the river and through the woods leads you to a gorgeous view of the Pigeon River, and to a small lock ‘n’ lock.

The Pigeon River was named for the Passenger Pigeons that once numbered in the billions here in Northern America, but which are now extinct. The river drains a 16,765 ha agricultural watershed completely contained within Ottawa County, and it discharges through Pigeon Lake into south-central Lake Michigan. At the posted coordinates, it meanders west through the Pigeon River Greenway.

The greenway includes 239 acres of woods and wetlands straddling the Pigeon River in Olive township, west of US31. This area is divided into Hemlock Crossing and Pine Bend parks, and offers over 6 miles of well-marked trails through bottomland and upland forest, old pine plantations and northern hardwood forest, emerging wetlands and open fields.

Facilities in the greenway include a 350' pedestrian bridge, numerous overlooks offering scenic views of the river corridor, picnic shelters, restrooms, and a kayak/canoe launch. Oh, and a whole flock of great caches! Pine Bend is another access on the west end of the property with parking, a picnic area, restrooms and a trail head.

There are no entry fees, and both parks are open year 'round. Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m from April 1 through October 31, and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. from November 1 through March 31. This is a popular winter destination for cross-country skiers, and the cache should be accessible year 'round.

The cache is a small cammo'd lock 'n' lock, with a small log, small coins, small TBs, small bugs, small snakes, small lizards, and a few small pathtags.
