Geocache Description:

This is one of six caches including a bonus cache placed around Caradon hill based on a mining theme. You will need to visit and collect the part coordinates from the five of the caches to locate the bonus. The caches are labelled 1 to 5 and are on a circular of about 4.1 miles or 6.7km from the suggested parking area. A lot of the tracks and paths you will need to follow are old mine railways, leats and quarry tracks, so sensible footwear is a must.

Two ruined engine houses stand near the road between Minions and Caradon Hill. During the 1830s this was operated under the Cornwall Great United Mining Associaton that ran several mines in the area at that time, including Phoenix and Wheal Prosper (South Phoenix). Five shafts are known to have been in use at Wheal Jenkin then :Creases,Pink,Adit,Whim and Bullocks engine until late 1837 the association collapsed with losses in excess of £50,000.
In 1883 Marke Valley Mines attempted to reuse the sett again for tin and renamed the old Whim shaft to Bellinghams engine shaft, where it was deepened from 25 fathoms to 100 fathoms and the mine produced 292 tons of tin concentrate. The mine was closed in 1890
If you follow the disused railway line that runs between the two engine houses to the Minions direction you will find yourself at the remains of Rillation bridge that once carried the Liskeard and Caradon railway over the road. This was demolished between 1945 and 1947 apparently because American troops towards the end of world war two had knocked into it with big guns, leaving it dangerous.
Between Caradon Challenge 3 and 4 you will pass close to a adit at N50 31.135 W004 26.224 if you do visit the adit return back to the path to continue your journey as it is a easier walk than following the river. On this path you will also pass a Marke Valley marker stone on the left at N50 31.117 W004 26.151

Please note that on this part of the moor the weather can change very quickly, so always go prepared.
