INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #653

"Sodom/Myers Cemetery"

This quest will bring you to the Sodom/Myers cemetery in Baker Township of Morgan County. This is a well maintained cemetery, but has the appearance that some headstones may be missing. It's a fairly large area with just a few graves scattered around. It was a peaceful and beautiful place on the fall day when I visited. A Methodist church used to be at this location as well.

The 21st Indiana Regiment

The 21st Indiana regiment became the 1st Heavy Artillery regiment in 1863. While initially assigned to guard Baltimore Maryland, the regiment spent much of the war in deep south. They were stationed in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, where they took part in the seige of Port Hudson and the Red River Campaign. They then moved to the Mobile Alabama area where they fought in battles at Spanish Fort and Fort Blakeley. The battle at Fort Blakeley actually occurred a couple of days after the surrender at Appomatix Courthouse. Then after the war the regiment occupied Mobile.

22nd Indiana Regiment Veteran

The 22nd was formed at Madison Indiana and saw a lot of heavy action in the south. It lost 14 officers and 139 men as casualties. The regiment earned battle stars for many of the major actions in the western theater of the war. They participated in battles at Pea Ridge Arkansas, Corinth Mississippi, Stones River and Chattanooga Tenessee, Perryville Kentucky, the Atlanta campaign in Georgia and finally to the late battles in the Carolinas.
