The cache is currently disabled because the location is currently indefinitely closed for essential maintenance. I will periodically check on the location's status and update its status here accordingly.
Its listed as a 1.5 terrain as reaching the cache from a wheelchair might be a bit of a stretch from the area you don't need to pay to access (but possible with assistance) however if you decide to visit the attraction itself, its definitely a terrain 1 as the cache will literally be at your feet when you find it!
This cache is placed in a location where you can look in and see some of the ruins that are left over of the amazing industrial heritage found in this gorge, where the remains of tinplate and ironworks can still be seen. You’ll also see the lower segment of the waterfall that gives this cache and area its name. To see it all up close there’s an entry fee, but to get to the cache itself, you don’t have to pay, unless you fancy a cream tea...
The organisation who manage this location actually generate all their electrical requirements using a large waterwheel which generates about 20KW of power, the largest electricity generating water wheel in Europe – not to mention their hydro electric turbine which feeds about 200KW of power (enough to power a street of about 20 houses) back into the National Grid.
They’ve also considered the environment – there’s an elaborate system to allow salmon to traverse up the river to spawn, bypassing the almost impossibly harsh main waterfall and the electricity turbine.
The cache container is now a fair size, so larger swaps are encouraged. Because of its size and hiding location please re-hide the cache carefully so as not to be visible nearby.
The cache is placed with the kind permission and assistance of the National Trust.
This is a fantastic location - if you get the chance to visit the main site while here, I encourage you to do so. I've been here many times not only to see the impressive waterfalls, but also to see the preserved industrial architectural heritage. Many also come here to practice photography skills.
IMPORTANT: This cache is NOT AVAILABLE 24 hours a day and indeed in winter is not available at all during most week days. It does however comply with the rules in that it is in an area that you don’t have to pay to visit when Aberdulais Falls is open to the public. If the attraction is closed – so is access to the cache. As part of getting permission for placing this cache I have been asked to emphasize that under no circumstances would it be acceptable to attempt this cache when the location is closed to the public and this would be viewed as deliberate trespass by the land owners, especially in its current temporary slightly revised location!
