What we know as Winter Hill has many different summits within it. Egg Hillock is one that stands out because of its rather distinctive name. It lies on the North East side of Winter Hill and is one of the smaller summits (1076 feet, compared to 1496 feet for Winter Hill)
Unlike nearby Counting Hill its a bit easier to see how Egg Hillock derrives its name, although you have to use some imagination to get it to look like an egg!
From the summit of Egg Hillock you can see into Shay Dingle and the wood beyond. By all accounts this wood is one of the most beautiful places in the area and has a waterfall in the middle of it. Unfortunately its privately owned and out of bounds so we just have to stare wistfully at it from Egg Hill summit.
Next to Egg Hillock we have the larger summit of Whimberry Hill. Although at 1115 feet its taller than its neighbour it lacks its character I think.
When I placed the cache I walked to Egg Hillock across the intruigingly named Daddy Meadows from Counting Hill. This terrain is quite rough in parts but even though its close to a road there are no obvious public access points from there. The easiest way is probably to pick up the path through the quarry at the bottom of Scout Road.
