Geocache Description:

A great walk to a very different view of Albany.

On 29 September, 1791, George Vancouver (1757–98) arrived and named King George Sound. Vancouver spent over two weeks in Frenchman's Bay, exploring and charting the coast. On the day of his arrival a small party, which included Vancouver, made its way to a small headland at the western end of the Sound. This headland overlooked a small harbour which Vancouver named Princess Royal Harbour. He named the headland Point Possession, the British flag was flown, toasts were drunk and formal possession was taken. George Vancouver was the first known European to reach King George Sound and its two harbours - Princess Royal and Oyster Harbours. Vancouver described it as the best natural harbour in the world.

The cache is set on Point Possession. Park at Whalers Cove (S35 03.429 E 117 55.590) and take the Point Possession Heritage Trail. You will go within metres of the first geo-cache to be set in WA.

When you get to the isthmus you can go left (on the edge of the harbour) or right (on the ocean beach). Go which ever way takes your fancy. There's some good signage along the way giving the history of the area.

Don't bother turning on the GPS until you get out to Vancouver's Cairn out on the headland. You can then go along a little track into the bush and find an ammo box between some reeds and rocks. No need to bush bash.

The walk is about an hour each way, total two hours. The sign says 3 and a half hours because that's for people like us who stop at every photo opportunity and wildflower and then beach comb on the way back.

Although the walk isn't too strenuous you should take water and maybe a snack.
