The name Kilrea means "grey churches" or "church of the crosses". The town started life as an ancient settlement commanding one of the main Bann crossings. Hugh Thompson who has family connections to Kilrea illustrated all six of Jane Austin's classics as well as many other celebrated literary works, and until recently, his work adorned boxes of Quality Street.
Kingfishers found all along the river all year round. The birds burrow a horizontal tunnel into sandy riverbanks and at the furthest end create a nesting chamber. During breeding season they can be seen hunting around deep pools, rich in young fish which the birds need for feeding their young.
Access 6 on the Lower Bann.
Please be careful when replacing cache, make sure you put it back exactly where you found it.
