Did you know that German immigrants settled in the Bear Creek area in the 1800's? Did you know that the Bear Creek area (Highway 6 and Clay Road) was also named Bear Hill? Did you know there are at least 3 cemeteries in this same area that predate the civil war?
The Koch - Schmidt Cemetery is located on Groeschke Rd. in Cullen Park near South Mayde Creek in west Harris County, Texas. It is under the control of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The cemetery has a tall fence around it with a locked gate. Entry may be gained by contacting the Addicks Project Office. Luckily, when I arrived this morning the cemetery's gate was wide open so I slipped inside for some photos. A good telephoto lens can still get you excellent pictures from the chain link fence that surrounds it. There were several family names in this cemetery that I recognize: GROSCHKE,HOFFMANN,KOCH (one from 1854!!), and ADICKS. There are three that I noticed that were CSA soldiers in the civil war. All in all, a very important chunk of history for this area can be found at the above co-ordinates. This section of Cullen park is locked during the week most of the time, and the hours of operation are posted nearby. However, the hike and bike trail could provide access if it's later in the day. The cache container is an XL Bison Tube with a buck and a blank log for the FTF. You do not have to be inside the fence to retrieve this cache.
