Geocache Description:

Welcome to another history lesson for the Bear Creek- Addicks area! I'm Bografan, I'll be your guide for this cache. On this cache, you're looking for a micro in the woods. (I hear the groans already)

The Hwy 6 / Patterson Road area actually had another name: Addicks,TX. Addicks was named after its first postmaster Henry Addicks in 1884! The original town site was located just south of the intersection of Patterson Road and ROUTE 6. Addicks was a railroad stop for the Bear Creek community and all the people who homesteaded along Langham Creek, Bear Creek, and South Mayde Creek. In 1891 the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad was finished and the area became a mecca for farmers and ranchers. The hurricane of 1900 destroyed both Addicks and Bear Creek communities but they were quick to rebuild. In 1947, over 40 homes and buildings were relocated under the Federal Flood Control Project to a location near the current intersection of Hwy 6 and I-10. Some of the other old structures are still visible today, one of the most popular is the old bridge on the west side of the addicks dam. I've heard good things about the cache there. Some lesser known structures still stand, and that is where we are headed to today. Check your SAT maps and scout ahead-- There is a broken down gate just east of GZ that heads into the Army Corps of Engineers land. It's not recommended to park there as there is very little room to maneuver but it may serve as a good starting point. Sorry, I forgot to get a waypoint for that. The best access would be to park at Patterson and 6, and get across to the hike/bike trailhead and walk south along 6 to the gate. @ GZ you can see the traffic wizzing by on Hwy 6. This cache is .25 of a mile from parking lot at Patterson, and requires about 200' of medium to heavy bushwhacking. There are mosquitoes galore out here right now-- We bathed in DEET to place this cache! It's also an area we've found a shed from a pretty big snake, so please be careful out here. It's muddy, sweaty bushwhacking fun! I hope you enjoy this area. I know I did.
