George Washington as he took command as General of American Revolutionary War Forces at Cambridge. First President of United States.

In Chicago's Washington Park stands a replica of a statue erected in France of the first President of the United States, George Washington. The statue honors Washington and his accomplishments as one of the country's first leaders.

George Washington was born in 1732 to a Virginia farming family. When he was ten, his father died and Washington moved to Mount Vernon, where he was raised by his stepbrother, Lawrence. When Lawrence died, Washington inherited the estate. He began doing local surveying projects for Lord Thomas Fairfax but Washington dreamed of a prosperous military career. Washington grew increasingly resentful toward the British as they began to inflict new policies on the colonies, so at the age of twenty, he joined the military. Just two years later, as a Lieutenant Colonel, he fought in the earliest battles of the French and Indian War. When the Revolutionary War began, Washington was elected Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. After the war, the public was so impressed by his ability to lead, he was unanimously elected to be the first President of the new nation. Though Washington was desperate to return to his estate, he undertook his newly assigned role because he feared the young nation would crumble without leadership. He would served eight years as President of the United States.
