If you have ever shopped in a convenience store in the Fredericton area you know the Scholten name. This cache honors that family
The farm on the south side of the road at the cache site used to belong to the Scholten family.
The family immigrated to Canada in 1952 with 17children, one had died in Holland, and two more were born in Canada. Yes that makes 20 children!
Eighteen of the children lived here on the farm and worked on the farm or in the woodlot they owned.
In 1958 two of the children died while living on the farm. The two were 8 and 9 years of age.
They lived here until 1958 when they moved to University Avenue and later to the old medical clinic which they set up as a local boarding house.
My wife, one of the Scholten children, says she remembers her mother peeling a 50 pound bag of potatoes every day to feed the boarders and herself making endless sandwiches for their lunches.
As the family grew most of the brothers became local business men and owned and operated convenience stores in and around the Fredericton area. Most of these stores are still in the family but with the next generation.
Their story is a very interesting example of immigrants becoming successful Canadian citizens.
Have a look at some the pictures below with there captions!
