Trail Reader: I needed to drop a TB and decided to run a cache check at the same time. Bad news! Not only could I not find the container, but I was also disappointed to see that the area was littered with junk. Although the cache was a good marker for this portion of the park, I have still decided to archive. Thanks to all who visited!

Geocache Description:


Fort Ord Dunes State Park is located on four miles of Monterey Bay shoreline. The area is open and relatively undeveloped, but has a military history as a small arms training ground. Over 100 abandoned buildings and military remnants are scattered throughout the African ice plant-covered dunes.

Because the park has not yet officially opened, access is limited. The black plastic-covered sign located at this secret trailhead entry indicates that the main entrance to the park will be located to the north. However, that entrance is currently fenced off and closed. In the meantime, entry and parking are available here on the corner of 1st Avenue and 1st Street: the secret trailhead.

The container is a camo'd plastic jar filled with small trade items and a log. Please bring your own pen.

UPDATE: In March 2009, the park officially opened. Hours are 8:00 to a half hour after sunset daily. Admission is free.
