Geocache Description:

The WATER Center

The coordinates will take you to the Wichita Area Treatment, Education & Remediation (WATER) Center. The WATER Center’s outdoor features are open every day from dawn to dusk. The Center’s museum is open from 1-4:30 PM on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays except for holidays. Tours of the treatment building and educational programs are available by arrangement.

The WATER Center’s remediation complex includes five and one-half miles of piping, thirteen extraction wells, and a venturi air stripping system operated to limit the spread of the contaminated groundwater. After treatment, the remediated water flows through Wichita’s largest public aquarium, a creek, and wetlands before entering the Arkansas River. The aquarium is home to native species such as catfish, sunfish, and suckers.

The trail along the creek provides visitors with viewing opportunities for wildlife attracted to the newly-created habitat as well as demonstrative exhibits on wetlands, buffer strips, and non-point source pollution. At the Aquarium, stop pick up a TRAIL GUIDE that will give you information about the stops at the numbered trail posts and signs found along the way. Head up the stairs by the trail guide box to Number 1 and follow the cement path.

The coordinates will take you to several stops along the trail. Stay on the trail as you go to each of the coordinates.
