INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST #657

"First Lady"

Welcome to Miriam Benedict Memorial Cemetery, in LaPorte County, Indiana.

This cemetery was known as Union Chapel Cemetery but was rededicated in honor of Miriam Benedict.

Miriam Benedict came to LaPorte County in 1829. She and her family were the first white settlers in what is now LaPorte County. She bought her land in 1831, and because she was a widow, she paid a mere $1.25 an acre. Her house was located near Westville on what is now SR #421.

Miriam Benedict's Gravesite

There is much history to be found in this small but well kept cemetery.

Buried here is Miriam E. Warnock who was the first white child born in LaPorte County on July 16, 1829.

Also, buried here is Sarah J. Bloomhoff who is believed to be the niece to none other than Daniel Boone.

And of course we cannot forget the veterans laid to rest in this cemetery. You will find buried here veterans of the Civil War, War of 1812, and the Spanish American War.
