Un tombolo est un cordon de sable ou de galets qui s’installe
naturellement entre une île et la côte avoisinante.
Le double tombolo résulte en fait de l'action conjuguée :
- Des variations successives du niveau de la mer lors des
glaciations du quaternaire :le niveau de la mer remonte en effet
depuis 18000 ans et a entraîné le recul du trait de côte et la
formation des îles actuelles et de "l'île" de Giens, qui est restée
cependant liée au continent par 2 dorsales rocheuses.
- Des alluvions des fleuves côtiers, qui se sont déposées
sur ces éperons rocheux immergés et sur la plate-forme continentale
sous-marine peu profonde. En effet, le tombolo occidental a été
formé par l'ancien cours du Gapeau qui se déversait alors dans le
golfe de Giens, et le tombolo oriental, lui, provient des alluvions
du Gapeau, du Roubaud et du Pansard.
- Des courants marins qui entraînent et ordonnent les
particules alluvionnaires.
- De l'herbier marin de posidonie; qui piège les masses
sédimentaires, amortit la houle et protège les plages.
En Europe, il n’existe que deux autres double tombolo:
- en Italie à Orbetello
- en Espagne à Ifach Calpe.
Pour valider la cache:

vue.

- Connaissez-vous le nom des étangs entre les deux tombolo?
- Trouvez la longueur et la largeur approximatives du tombolo Est
et Ouest?
- Quel échassier peut-on voir souvent?

A tombolo is a sandbar connecting an island to the mainland. Here,
we can observe a double tombolo.
The double tombolo results from combined action:
- Successive variations of the sea level during the
glaciations of the quaternary: the sea level has raised for 18000
years and involved the retreat of the feature of coast and
formation of islands and "l'île" of Giens, wich remained connected
to the mainland by two rock dorsals.
- Alluvia of the coastal rivers deposited on these outcorps
immersed and on the underwater continental shelf not very
deep.Then, the Western tombolo was formed by old course of Gapeau
wich flowed in the gulf of Giens, and the Eastern tombolo arises
from the alluvia of Gapeau, Roubaud and Pansard rivers.
- Sea currents carry away and order the alluvial
particles.
- Marine herbarium of posidonie traps the sedimentary
masses, deadens the swell and protects the beaches.
We find in Europe only two other examples:
- Orbetello in Italia
- Ifach Calpe in Spain.
