1. What type of geological material was dredged (removed) from the river to create the islands?

2. What type of fish uses the river-bottom pathway created by this dredging?

- What is a pool?
Each lock and dam creates a pool upstream of it.

You are looking at Pool 5A. The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge lies within Pool5A.

The islands were topped with material dredged from the river. Seeds buried in the material began to sprout. Additional plantings of trees, shrubs, prairie grasses and wildflowers have become home to nesting songbirds, geese and mallards. The dredging created a river-bottoms pathway for a certain type of fish.
