Geocache Description:

Siev X Memorial - a place to ponder

The cache is not at the listed coordinates. You will find the coordinates for the cache by researching the answers to some questions on the internet and visiting some physical locations to answer some more questions.

The purpose of this cache is to show you the very interesting, tasteful and poignantly beautiful memorial to a human tragedy, and to remember and explore some of the history surrounding this event. There is no need to "take sides" - just to acknowledge that real people died in very sad circumstances.

Largely forgotten by many Australians, the greatest maritime catastrophe off Australian shores since the second world war occurred on 19 October 2001, leaving 353 people dead on their way to Australia....The nameless refugee boat that sank has come to be called SIEV-X....SIEV-X carried nearly 400 people on only 20 metres, which is about the distance between the wickets on a cricket pitch....Also crowded on board were many women and children....Not only were the women and children additional customers to people smugglers and extra burdens on the tiny vessel, surviving the cold waters after the sinking proved impossible for most of them.

In response, ...a memorial project to the victims of the SIEV-X tragedy. After a long process, the memorial was erected in September 2007. It consists of 353 wooden poles, one for each victim, meandering along the shore of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra. Every pole depicts an Australian motif or symbol, created by groups and individuals from all over the country. A name tag on the pole identifies the victim, if known. The sight is stunning, showing the magnitude of the otherwise abstract number 353 while remembering each individual.....

The memorial reminds us of the horrors that can follow from dehumanising the weakest who seek our help. “It stands for human values.”

For now, the memorial is temporary, but the organisers hope it will become permanent to transport its message to all Australians.

From the internet

Let A, B, C, D equal the number of letters in each word in the abbreviation SIEV. (http://www.sievx.com/FAQ.shtml)

Let E equal the number of letters in the last name of the Australian diplomat who first queried the official account of the sinking (as credited by www.sievxmemorial.com)

Let F,G respectively equal the number of letters in each of the two words in the name of the boat who rescued the 45th survivor (as credited by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIEV-X)

At Weston Park, meander along with the poles

At or near WP1, X, Y and Z are the first 3 numbers (not digits in first number) on the sign.

At or near WP2, W is the first number (not digit) on the sign.

At or near WP3, "Deception Bay", V is the number of white doves on the pole.

At or near WP4, "Toorak", U is the number of butterflies on the pole plus 1.

At or near WP5, T is the number of lit candles on the same pole as the lighthouse clock (?) plus 1.

Calculate GZ as follows:

#### = ABCD - TVW + FG + B

@@@ = X + Y+ Z + VEU - AB - B

S35 1#.### E149 5.@@@.
Cache is in Weston Park
