Ode to Darkmoon.
As the sun faded out of sight and the darkness began to take hold of the land, I placed my last cache for the day. The waxing moon quickly disappeared behind a thick fury of clouds. A storm was arriving. Suddenly, out of the sky came the bright flash from a bolt of lightening. The thunder boomed as if it were placing a curse on my little cache. The winds were swirling the freshly fallen leaves around me. My senses were tingling.
From behind a nearby tree a dark figure appeared. It seemed as if it were floating against the wind. I wasn’t sure whether I should approach or run as fast as I could to my car. I decided to run, but my feet were frozen in fear. The figure started to come toward me. The terror began to consume my mind. Closer and closer it came. The wind was so strong that I couldn’t catch my breath to scream.
As I hopelessly watched while the leaves were whipping around my face, I could see it was an old woman. Her hair was black like tar. Her eyes were glowing yellow against the flashes of lightening. Her fingers were long and twisted. She wore a dark, tattered cape and carried a large walking staff.
The old woman stood before me and stared into my eyes. My heart was racing. She leaned in and spoke with a raspy voice, “I saw you hide something over there, what was it?”
“Just a key box”, I answered slowly.
She quickly snapped. “A key box, you say. What kind of key is inside?”
I uttered, “there is no key, just a piece of paper.” I could tell by the way she tapped her fingers on her staff that she didn’t believe me. I started to edge ever so slightly to my car. I needed to get away, and fast.
She began to run her twisted fingers through her hair. “Key boxes are for keys and I'm missing a key. Show me the box! I want to see the key that’s inside it!” She screeched.
With trembling hands I pointed to the hidden key box. “It’s right there, but there is no key.”
She reached down and snared the small cache and thrust it open. “The key is gone” she screamed.
By this time the car handle was only a few feet away. I lunged toward the door and opened it. The old woman grabbed for my jacket, but she missed. I slammed the door shut and locked it as quickly as I could. As I started the engine, I could see the rage building in her face.
As I drove away into the darkness, I could here her screaming, “the key, the key, where is the key?”
So for the few who are brave enough, approach this cache with caution. Use your skills of stealth. If you happen to have an unwanted key lying around the house, you might want to bring it with you, just in case.
If you read this story you are probably thinking to yourself that you will be looking for a key box. Wrong. It's just a story and the cache is not a key box..
And the FTF goes to the brave and daring ICULUNGMAN. Anyone else dare to try?
