NWG #25 Beauties and the Beasties Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Makuta Teridax: Hei, nor_we_guys!

Geocache Description:

This cache site lets you view some of the beauty of boat paint, but is intended to present the darker side. (Plus a taste of environmental geology)

Boat paints have created glorious galleon ladies, and certainly protected
many a ship…however, in the past beastly chemicals have been added to paints
to obviously hinder creatures from eating their way through hulls. This use has
resulted in the spreading of these environmental toxins into the food chain, namely fish!

Today these little chemical beasts can also be found in surprisingly high concentrations in many
areas where boat maintenance has been performed. Unfortunately, some of
these places may be used as sunbathing, picnic or swimming beaches…

Who are these “beasties”? Well, here are the main ones:
- Heavy metals, including copper (Cu), lead (Pb), Zinc (Zn), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As)
- Poly aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), including tar, naftalen and many others
- Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) -- a real environmental nasty
- Tributyltin (TBT)
- and last but not least oils.

But wait….Lets not panic! !
Just keep it in the back of your mind if you are looking for a good spot
to sunbath, or swim with kids. With high heavy metal contamination nothing
may want to grow in the soil?…maybe it has a dark or black color?….maybe it
smells of tar or oil? Maybe it may not be a good place to build a sand castle,
or eat that hotdog that fell on the ground? You don’t always want to be what you eat…

As for the cache site…it is situated by Galleri Tordenskjold.
Visit it’s home page at skutemaler.com

The cache contains a variety of fish related items:

-1 box of svolværpostei …see: miljøgifter i fiskelever (in Norwegian)
-2 packs fisherman friend
-1 pack saltsild and 1 pack sursild

Enjoy! !
