The observation post was originally built by Lawrence Hewitt in July 1942 on the hill behind where the Petersburgh Library is now. It was part of the Aircraft Warning Service created in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor to prevent surprise attacks by air. Over 50 local volunteers were trained to serve as aircraft observers who took turns manning the post 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until the close of the war.
Over 16,000 observation posts were established at strategic locations across the US.
The building was outfitted with a woodstove for heat, a single bulb for light, binoculars, images of aircraft profiles and a crank telephone to report sightings. A report of an aircraft sighting took priority over all other traffic on the telephone and the information about it was reported to the Air Defense Filter Center in Syracuse. All the aircraft sighted over Petersburgh turned out to be friendly.
Supervisor Mason Hubbard and Rolland Hewitt (Son of the original builder) found the old original building, restored it to match the original, and moved it to its current location. The building will be open to the public at the posted hours.
While your there stoll over and view the veterans honor roll monument built in 2006 to commemorate all Petersburghs veterans.Built from local stone, many from old foundations in the area. The large stones guarding the memorial represent the men and women who served our country. This memorial is a worthy tribute to the sacrifices they and their families made for our freedoms.
