Geocache Description:

This is one of six caches including a bonus cache placed around Caradon hill based on a mining theme. You will need to visit and collect the part coordinates from the five of the caches to locate the bonus. The caches are labelled 1 to 5 and are on a circular of about 4.1 miles or 6.7km from the suggested parking area. A lot of the tracks and paths you will need to follow are old mine railways, leats and quarry tracks, so sensible footwear is a must.

Warning this area has an uncapped deep shaft. The shaft is fenced off but a small dog maybe able to squeeze through.
The mine gained its name after the family (Marke) who owned most of the land in the area.
The Marke valley mine produced 128,500 tons of copper ore between 1844 and 1890, this was only second to the South Caradon Mine. In 1883 the mine reached a depth of 100,00 below the surface. This mine was linked to the Caradon and Liskeard railway which ran between the Minions and the Looe via Tokenbury corner where the suggested parking is for the challenge series. The railway line was extended to serve the mine in 1887 due to it importance. Shortly after the line completion copper mining had decreased and tin was now being mined instead.

The shaft mentioned above in the warning is Salisbury Shaft and is well worth a visit as on a still day you can hear water flowing far below. This was named after many of the shareholders who came from Salisbury. This can be found further down the hill from the cache.

Between Caradon Challenge 3 and 4 you will pass close to a adit at N50 31.135 W004 26.224 if you do visit the adit return back to the path to continue your journey as it is a easier walk than following the river. On this path you will also pass a Marke Valley marker stone on the left at N50 31.117 W004 26.151

Please note that on this part of the moor the weather can change very quickly, so always go prepared
