Check It Out Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

gbmcache: I checked the cache this afternoon and found it to be as secure from access as any cache could be. I was quite impressed by the engineering that went into the structure. If you are nearby downtown check it out. If the cache is to be resurrected it will have to be complete reimagined.

Geocache Description:

The Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County is the system of 24 regional and neighborhood branches that serve the county. The cache is located at the Main Branch in Downtown Charlotte.

The Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County: Check it out: (visit link)

Downtown rather than Uptown has been purposely used in this description in the spirit of the vintage buildings mentioned below and in memory of the Charlotte that was - before she got so uppity. The Main Library, however, is a timeless, albeit ever evolving, institution whose antecedent was the Carnegie Free Library established in 1903 and situated on a portion of the library lot facing Tryon Street.

While you are at the corner of Sixth and Tryon Streets notice what is on the other corners. Across Tryon St. is Discovery Place, one of the country’s top science museums. It features hands-on displays and several traveling exhibits throughout the year. Check it out: (visit link)

Across Sixth Street is the shell of the old Carolina Theater. If you are old enough maybe you remember seeing Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley perform, or seeing movies such as The Sound of Music or Patton. Until 1955, when Ovens Auditorium opened, the theater was the focal point of entertainment in the area. The theater closed in 1978. The Carolina Theater Preservation Society has been formed to promote and assure the preservation of this 1927 venue of theater, opera, concerts, and movies. There have been proposals for the restoration, incorporating it into other development of the site, but it is anybody's guess when any restoration will occur. No link here. Just look across the street and check it out.

On the remaining corner is the Dunhill Hotel, the current iteration of the Mayfair Hotel which opened in 1928. This is one of the few high-rise buildings which survived Urban Renewal of the 1960’s and the building boom of the 1990’s and 2000’s. No link here. Just walk across the street and check it out.

Down Tryon St., next to the library, is Spirit Square. Formed from the old First Baptist Church building, it has, since 1980, been a venue for performers and lecturers of every imaginable form. With its stained glass windows and Byzantine dome, the McGlohon Theater makes each event a unique intimate experience. Walk down the street and check it out.

The difficulty of this cache is to retrieve the container without being noticed by muggles. Most any time of the day or night any day of the week there will be people hanging about. If you have to come back the trip can be worth your while. There is plenty to do in downtown Charlotte: many restaurants and other sights to see. Oh yes, there are several other caches in the downtown area. Check them out..

Getting accurate coordinates in an urban forest is in iffy thing. The hint is a dead giveaway, however.

When replacing the cache be sure it is securely attached before releasing your hand.
