Granite is a common and widely occurring type of igneous rock (volcanic). The color can be pink to dark gray or even black, depending on the chemical and mineral content. Typically, granite is mostly silicon dioxide and is nearly always massive, hard and tough. This is why it has been used as a construction stone since the times of the early Egyptians. The high country of the Sierra Nevada is an awesome monument to "plutonic" granite, where the minerals are crystallized into visible grains.

Of interest to us is that the presence of very high quality granite drew immigrants to Placer County during the years following the main California gold rush. The towns of Rocklin and Penryn were founded mostly by folks from Finland and Wales in the 1860s. These people knew hard rock mining from their European background. Much prime quality granite is still being commercially mined in the area. Granite for the state capitol, the US Mint and many other buildings in San Francisco and Sacramento came from Rocklin’s quarries.
